How Can I Tell If My Water Heater is Working?

Hey everyone, I'm a first-time homeowner and I'm a bit perplexed about my water heater. I have a bathroom in my primary bedroom that isn't getting any hot water, and I'm not sure if it's because the water heater is turned off or if something's broken. I checked the water heater and the knob is pointed to 'on', but I'm not seeing any indicators that it's definitely operating. Should I be looking for a pilot light, or is there something else I should check? Also, I'm not sure about some switches in that room—could any of those possibly control the water heater? Any advice would be super helpful!

Make sure to take off the metal cover underneath the knobs and look inside to confirm if the pilot light is actually lit, that’s key. If you can’t see any glow, that could be the culprit. Here’s where I found a good video on how to check it out: [How to Light Your Pilot Light](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5gJRU-20a0&ab_channel=HouseImprovements).

I checked there, and it appears dark as well. I wonder if the unit is just too old since it was mentioned in my inspection that it was from 2010. Time to think about a replacement if it's truly not working.

Definitely check the pilot light. There's usually a small window to see if it's lit. If it’s not shining, that could be your issue! And if you need more help, checking the manual could provide useful troubleshooting steps. Here’s a link that might help you out: [A. O. Smith Water Heater Support](https://www.aosmithatlowes.com/owner-center/product-support).

Thanks for the tip! I looked to see if the pilot was on but couldn't find any glow. I tried following some online instructions to light it, but still no luck. Is it supposed to be plugged into something? I couldn’t find any visible power supply.
