I recently bought my first home, and the previous owner rented it out for over 15 years. The side yard is small and pretty much overrun with weeds and tree saplings. Since it's such a small space, I'd love to hear some ideas for using it effectively, like perhaps a patio or a shade garden. Also, what's the best way to clear it out? Should I just plant grass, go for patio tiles, or something else? Thanks for your input!

You could turn that space into a lovely spot with ground cover plants and some stepping stones. It would look really nice and be low maintenance. Plus, those stones will give it a nice pathway vibe!
Consider using the area for storage by adding a small shed to keep your tools out of sight. Alternatively, making a shaded patio would be great for kids or pets on hot days. Just ensure the patio is built well with proper drainage—having it sloped away from the house is crucial! Also, pay attention to that gutter downspout; directing water away is an important part of the plan.
Given the tree cover, maintaining grass might be tough. I suggest mulching the area instead. You could also create a small concrete pad for patio furniture, which would be a cozy spot! Gravel could work too, but keep in mind it might get a bit trickier to install and could cost more.

That sounds like a great idea! I love the look of stepping stones mixed with plants.
