How Can I Trim the Roots of My Peace Lily?

I've been feeling guilty about my peace lily not growing well. I realize now it's probably because she's developed a ton of secondary and tertiary roots, which might be taking up all her energy. I'm wondering how to downsize her pot without harming her—if I trim some of those roots, will she still thrive, or is it better to leave them be and plant her in a bigger pot? Any advice?

Hey! I'm in the same boat, curious about this too. I've always just moved my plants to bigger pots without thinking about root trimming. I wonder if cutting the roots would actually help her grow better? It sounds like it could be a good way to stimulate new growth instead of just expanding the roots further. Hoping someone with more experience can jump in here!

Right? I never even considered chopping roots to encourage growth. I’ve always just been worried about how they’d react. I guess if done carefully, it might not be too harmful. But, I wonder just how much is too much to cut!

From what I understand, if your peace lily is sort of 'root-bound' and not showing any top growth, it sounds like she might need a larger space—but you could also try trimming. Just be gentle, and only cut away the dead or unhealthy roots if you do! This can actually encourage new growth, so it might be worth considering rather than just sticking her in a bigger pot.

That's really helpful info, thanks! I guess I just need to be careful with how much I cut. I’d hate for her to suffer because I was too eager to help!
