How Close Should I Plant Companion Plants in My First Vegetable Garden?

Hey everyone! I'm starting my very first veggie and fruit garden this year in some raised L-shaped beds (about 5x5 feet). Since I'm renting, I have two separate L-shaped garden beds to work with. I've been researching companion planting a lot and I'm really interested in it, but I have a couple of questions. How close can I plant my companion plants? And if I have a layout with tomatoes on one side, carrots in the middle, and cucumbers on the other, will the incompatible plants affect each other if they aren't right next to each other? Any insights would be super helpful!

It sounds like you're really eager to get started! Just a heads up, a lot of experienced gardeners think companion planting is a bit overrated. You don't need to stress too much about it; plants usually handle themselves pretty well as long as they're not right next to enemies. So don't overthink it too much!

Check out square foot gardening if you haven't already! It’s a fantastic method that allows you to maximize the number of plants in a small space. It might be exactly what you need for those raised beds!
