Hey everyone! My friend is looking to install a 6ft privacy fence in their backyard in Oregon, where they already have a 4ft chain link fence. I've read that fence posts typically need to be buried 1/3 to 1/2 the height of the fence and should be a minimum of 6 inches below the frost line, which is about 12-24 inches in Oregon. So, does this mean we should be digging the posts to around 30 inches at a minimum, ideally 36 inches? Also, we're curious about the best way to take down the old chain link fence. Is this a DIY job for them, or would it be better to hire someone to handle the fence removal and installation of the new posts? Then my friend and I could put on the cross beams and planks ourselves. Thanks for any advice!

In my experience, I've always put my posts 2 feet deep, and I've had no issues with stability. It sounds less than what you're hearing, but it works for me! It's worth keeping in mind that ground conditions can vary, so you might want to adjust based on your specific area.

Interesting! My friend is mid-state, and I wonder if there are any ground differences in our area related to that.
