Hey everyone! I'm a 25-year-old beginner trying to build a simple two-layer bench to hold some plant pots outside. I feel a bit silly asking this, but I'm unsure about how to purchase the wood I need. Should I buy longer pieces and ask the store to cut them down for me? I just need them cut straight, not angled or anything. Any tips from those with experience would be greatly appreciated!

If you have a roof rack, that could be a lifesaver! You can transport longer pieces home and then make your cuts there. Some stores might charge for cutting, so keep that in mind. For your bench, consider using pressure-treated pine or cedar for durability outdoors!
It really depends on the store you're visiting. Most big-box stores like Home Depot usually have someone who can cut wood for you, but keep in mind they might not be super precise with their cuts. If you're looking for something specific, like construction lumber, those are generally your options. Just a heads-up—if you’re buying from a hardwood dealer, they might limit how much they cut for you. You might end up needing to do some extra cutting yourself at home to get it just right!
Most big-box stores do offer cutting services, so you should be fine there. Alternatively, you can buy pre-cut pieces, which usually come in lengths from 4 to 12 feet. If you're planning to build frequently, consider picking up a cheap jigsaw or circular saw for some DIY cutting. Personally, I started with an old jigsaw before upgrading to a miter saw that I snagged at a garage sale for super cheap!
Just a heads up—jigsaws aren't the best for straight cuts. If you're going for precision, make sure you've got the right tool!

Thanks for the heads up! I'll check out the options and see how precise I can get.
