How do I connect an inverter to the 110 outlets in my RV with solar power?

I'm exploring the world of solar power for my truck camper and currently have shore power and a generator that both power the 110 outlets. I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect an inverter to these outlets. Do I need a special switch to toggle between using the generator and shore power?

You'll definitely want to look into an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). It’s essential for managing your power sources safely. Based on your setup, it sounds like you’re using a shore power cord to connect to either shore power or your generator, right? That’s where the ATS comes into play.

Absolutely! A transfer switch is crucial to avoid any electrical issues when switching between shore power, your generator, and the inverter. The most common and effective setup is an automatic transfer switch that prioritizes shore power, then the generator, and finally the inverter. Just keep in mind that you never want more than one power source trying to feed the same outlet at once, or you could end up with some costly mistakes!

Using an ATS is a great idea, but I recommend a hybrid inverter for your situation. This type stays inline with either your shore power or generator. A quality inverter can even enhance the output of your generator, especially in places where power might be unstable.
