How Do I Decide When to Get Multiple Quotes for Home Repairs?

As a new homeowner, I'm trying to figure out when it's necessary to get multiple quotes for repairs versus just hiring the first contractor who responds. Are there specific situations or dollar amounts where it's okay to skip the extra quotes? I'm looking at work like vapor barrier installation, deck repairs, rodent exclusion, and tree limbing.

Generally, it's a good idea not to bother with multiple quotes for smaller jobs that cost less than $1000, especially if you're confident in the contractor's work. For larger projects over $3000 or involving multiple trades, you definitely want to shop around. If you already have a trusted electrician or plumber, just go with them for the work!

Thanks for the advice!

As someone who bought a house recently, I can relate! I needed a bunch of repairs done, and finding licensed contractors was a hassle. I found one who could handle everything, and even though I might have scored a better deal shopping around, I felt comfortable with the quote. For smaller jobs, just know your budget and if the price fits, go for it. Bigger jobs usually need more competitive quotes, though, since prices can vary a lot!

I think this aligns with what I was thinking. I just didn't want to make a hasty decision. Thanks!

Don't just settle for the first contractor who gets back to you! It's smart to ask friends or neighbors for recommendations. I've built a great relationship with my contractor over the years because of a friend's suggestion—he's super reliable. And if you need another layer of assurance, check with your local government permitting office for trusted contractors. They often have great insights! Good luck with your repairs!
