How Do I Extend Electrical Outlets After Adding Drywall for Soundproofing?

Hey everyone! I hope it's not too silly to ask this, but I'm currently in the process of soundproofing a shared wall in my home. I'm using a resilient channel with rubber clips and adding two sheets of 5/8" drywall. The issue I'm facing is that the outlets are now about 3 inches further in due to the second layer of drywall. I can't seem to find any extenders that would work for that depth. What are my options for extending the outlets to accommodate this change? Any suggestions would really help!

You might not find a box extender that gives you an extra 3 inches. First, check if you have enough slack in your wires behind the box. You could consider using an old-work box installed in front of the existing one, but definitely check with a local electrician for code compliance.

There are longer screws available that can help with this issue. Just take out the existing screws on your outlet, swap them for longer ones, and the drywall will hold the outlet in place. It’s usually easier than you think!
