How Do I Fill Holes in My Cabinet After Removing a Microwave?

I just had a new microwave installed above my range, but it's misaligned and I've decided to have it returned. Now, when they remove it, I'll be left with four holes in the bottom of the cabinet. I plan to get the same model microwave, but I'm worried that the new installer may not be able to use those existing holes since I think the new microwave will need to be shifted slightly to the left. The current one is super tight against the right cabinet, and I'm concerned that my cabinets aren't in the best shape because of the previous installation. I'm thinking it's best to fill in those holes for a cleaner reinstall, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Any advice would be appreciated—thanks in advance!

Filling the holes can be a bit tricky. It's true that filler isn't as strong as the wood, so you might end up needing to drill new holes anyway. If the new holes are close, just use washers for added support during installation. Just a heads-up though, it might be safer to go for a solid fix with dowels instead!

Here's what you can do: Measure the size of the holes and grab some wooden dowels that fit. If you have different sizes, get multiple dowels. Cut them to the right length, apply wood glue around the edges and everywhere on the dowel, then push it into the hole. Place scrap wood over the dowel and hammer it flush. Once it’s dried, you can drill new holes without any worries!

Thanks for the tip! Do you have any advice on handling glue spillover from the dowel? I'm concerned since it's above the range.

Great question! You can put a cover or some paper down to catch any glue drips. Once it’s all dry, the dowel should be solid, and drilling through the glue won’t be a problem.
