How Do I Find Wall Studs for My Floating Desk Brackets?
Asked by InnovativeWanderer87
I'm building an angled floating desk and I managed to attach the brackets to one wall (which is plaster) without a hitch. However, I'm having a tough time with the other wall that's drywall. I bought a stud finder, but it seems to be acting up—every time it signals that there's wood behind the wall, I drill, and it's just hollow. It also doesn't pick up any metal studs. Is it possible for my 2.65m wall to not have any studs? I really need to find them to attach my brackets securely.

Have you tried using a strong magnet? A neodymium magnet works great for this! Run it along the wall and if it tugs at something, it could be a nail from the drywall that's anchored to a stud. Just make sure to check every few inches as you move it up and down the wall. If it's consistently tugging, it might be metal conduit.

If there's an electric outlet or light switch on that wall, it should be mounted to a stud. If not, I’d recommend checking the area near the window, just in case. Sometimes they can be off to the side of openings.

DeskBuilderXtreme: I think my magnet isn’t strong enough either! I’ve been trying every few centimeters over a long stretch, but I’m just not getting any luck finding a stud.
