How do I fix a hole in the wall behind my counter?

I've recently taken off an old backsplash in preparation for new countertops and found a bulging area that I suspect is related to the vent stack. My boyfriend went ahead and flattened the bulge, but we discovered that the rock lath behind it was in terrible shape, so he removed it. Now I need to fix the wall but I'm unsure how to properly mount a piece of drywall given that the elbow is sticking out a fair bit and moving it isn't an option. I'm also curious about how to finish off the join at the bottom of the drywall. Any tips?

If the pipe isn't sticking out too far, you should be able to fit a drywall piece in. Just make sure to carve out some relief space at the back to accommodate the pipe if it’s a tight fit. If it is sticking out too much, you might have to grind it down a bit. Ideally, if the wall was fully open, replacing the pipe altogether would be the best approach.

That makes sense. But how would you actually attach the drywall in this case? Can I use hot mud, or is there a better way? I can't really use screws at the bottom because of the countertop.

Yeah, replacing the pipe might end up requiring a full remodel! Just a heads up!
