How Do I Fix Rotting Porch Support Beams?

Asked By SunnyDayz123 On

I have a screened-in porch at the back of my house, and I discovered that one of the support beams in a corner is rotting. The rot spreads about 12 to 18 inches in both directions, but the rest of the beams seem fine. I'm looking for tips on how to tackle this issue. Any advice would be appreciated!

It sounds like you might be referring to the floor joists rather than the beams since they carry less weight under a porch. If it is indeed the outer joists that are rotting, you could consider sistering new joists to the existing ones to repair them. Just make sure to follow proper techniques to ensure it's an approved fix. Good luck!

Thanks for that insight! I wasn’t sure about the terms, but it makes sense now. Appreciate the clarification!

Definitely confirm if it's the joists or the beams. If it’s only a little rot, sistering the joists is a solid way to reinforce them and keep your porch sturdy. Also, it might be good to check for any moisture issues to prevent it from happening again.
