How Do I Garden Without Getting Sick?

I'm having a tough time with gardening lately. I've ended up needing steroids from my doctor twice after experiencing severe reactions from bug bites or maybe even something toxic in the soil. Being diabetic, my skin injuries lead to infections easily, and it's been particularly bad this time around. The doctor suspects it might be poison ivy, but I've carefully converted my grass into planted beds without any wild growth around. One theory is that the poison could have come from the wind. There's also talk about chiggers possibly being involved, or a combination of both. I really don't want to give up gardening, but I can't handle feeling sick every time I tackle a big project. What methods can I use to protect myself from bug bites without using pesticides, and how can I combat the risk of contact with airborne poison ivy? Have any of you made adjustments in your own gardening practices to avoid these issues?

It's also crucial to know if you're allergic to any plants in your garden. Try to avoid known allergens and keep covered fully to prevent skin contact with anything that might irritate you. Also, keep an eye out for critters like chiggers—wearing closed shoes and ankle coverings while gardening can help reduce the risk of bites. Good luck out there!

This is really helpful! I'm going to try finding some protective gear.

You might want to think about more physical barriers. A thick sunscreen or specialized lotion can help create a protective layer against potential allergens. If you're sensitive, it's good to gear up entirely with gloves and long sleeves—just being cautious can help keep rashes at bay!

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely be more careful with my gear.

Wearing long sleeves and gloves can make a big difference. I also recommend layers, like sweatpants or spandex sleeves for your arms. When I garden, I try to do it early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the harsh sun and bugs. And don't forget to wash your gardening clothes and shower right after to prevent any reactions from lingering allergens!
