How Do I Install a Toilet Flange? Is That Lip Supposed to Be There?

I just removed my toilet and found that the bolts weren't attached to anything, and the wax ring was completely missing. I cleaned up the area and found this—can someone tell me if the toilet flange goes here and what the lip is for? It looks a bit broken. Here's a link to the picture I took: https://imgur.com/a/qhawVTg

I've done a lot of contracting work, and while I can't see everything clearly from the pic, it seems like your flange might be missing the screw openings that hold the toilet bowl down. Sometimes older homes have that old lead bend that complicates things. You might need to lift up another piece that could be sitting in the waste line below.

Interesting! The home was built in the 80s, and I did lay the floor down, so it’s just concrete. Could that lead bend still be the issue?

It looks like you’ve got a broken PVC flange there. I’ve seen similar issues where the metal part breaks off completely. Just be careful—those metal pieces you found could be remnants of the old flange. You might need a new one to get everything stable for your new toilet.

That makes sense! I mean, there was a lot of debris around when I pulled the toilet up, so I guess that explains it.
