How Do I Keep Neighbor Cats Off My Astroturf So My Dog Can Use It?

I'm really struggling with a situation in my rented backyard, which is covered in astroturf. My dog typically only goes out there in the morning and evening, but unfortunately, the neighbor's cats have taken a liking to it for their bathroom breaks, and it's becoming overwhelming. I've noticed my dog avoids the area due to the mess, and I want to make sure she feels comfortable using it again. What can I do to prevent the cats from using the astroturf while still allowing my dog to go there? I've seen some products suggested, but it's tricky since it's astroturf. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

One option is to give the astroturf a deep clean, as you can actually hire professionals for that. After cleaning, using an orange-scented spray might help keep the cats away. Keep in mind that if your dog poops there, it might actually attract them more, so consider letting her go potty elsewhere. Just make sure it's clean for your dog and doesn't stink up the place for your neighbors!

Cats are creatures of habit, so it might be tricky. If you can put up some sort of barrier, like bird netting, it could stop them from getting in. You might also consider spraying ammonia around the edges of your yard, as cats find that smell unpleasant. Just remember to reapply if it rains!

Have you thought about getting a motion-activated sprinkler? It’s a great way to deter the cats while your dog is outside. Just remember to turn it off when your dog is around! It should help keep the furry intruders at bay.
