I'm not certain about the age of the shingles on my addition, and I'm looking for advice on knowing when it's time for a replacement. From the picture I shared, do those shingles look like they need replacing soon?

Replace them as soon as you spot issues like leaks. If you can’t replace them without wrecking the existing shingles, then it’s definitely worth considering a full replacement.
Those shingles are definitely reaching the end of their useful life. The white spots you're seeing are actually the frayed fiberglass mat that holds the shingles together. Over time, they've dried out and become brittle. It's a good idea to inspect your roof yearly and after any bad storms. If you notice shingles missing, torn, or creased, that's a cue to start thinking about replacement. While it might not be urgent now, you'll need to replace them in the next few years.
Honestly, it sounds like they've already passed their prime! If you notice any leaks or damage that makes it impossible to replace without damaging the old shingles, that’s when you know it’s time.
