How Do I Paint Over a Dark Red Wall to Light Blue?

I'm moving into a new house soon and this is my first time being able to paint since I've always rented. The master bedroom currently has a dark red feature wall, while the rest of the walls are white. I'm planning to paint the walls a light blue color, but I'm concerned about the red wall. Do I need to do anything special to the red wall to ensure that it doesn't end up as a different shade of blue, or can I just paint over it and expect everything to match?

Absolutely prime that red wall first! It can be tricky, but using Zinsser 1-2-3 Bullseye primer worked wonders for me when I painted my living room from red to a lighter color. You might also want to consider having the primer tinted to make it easier, but multiple coats should do the trick. Just keep an eye on it, and you'll be fine!

Thanks for the tip! Do I need to prime all the walls or just the red one?

It's a good idea to use a primer first, especially over a dark color like red. I suggest getting a good quality primer to block that red completely. It might take a couple of coats, but you should achieve a nice even finish with your light blue afterward. Enjoy your new home!

When I changed my red walls to light blue, I used a primer that was tinted light gray. It helped cover the red really well and made the final color come out beautifully. Give that a shot!
