How Do I Peen a Pin in a Tight Spot on My Woodworking Vise?

I'm trying to restore an old woodworking vise and I've learned the hard way that taking off the handle isn't a great idea. Now, I need to figure out how to peen the pin that's in a really tight space at the front face of the vise. I've included a link to an example of the same model for reference. Can you even peen a pin with a punch in such a narrow area?

Using a pointed punch is a solid approach; it spreads the pin out faster. You might want to consider hitting it at four different spots to ensure it's secure. Let me know if that works out for you!

I've got some tapered punches lying around, I'll check if any are pointed enough for this task. Appreciate the tip!

You can definitely peen with a punch! I've done it using brass before. Just make sure to heat the end of the pin a bit first, then insert it, peen it, and let it cool back down. This should help with the fitting process.

Sounds good! But I'm a bit worried if the brass will be strong enough. This pin has to handle quite a bit of stress on the vise.
