I just moved into a new place and I have an unfinished garage ceiling. I'm looking to add some beams using 2x4s between the joists, which are spaced 22.5 inches apart. Is that a typical measurement for joist spacing, and should I cut the 2x4s to that size? Also, do I really need joist hangers for this project?

It sounds like you’re measuring the space between the joists, and yes, 22.5 inches apart usually indicates they're 24 inches on-center, which is pretty common in garages and sheds. If you're adding beams, you don't really need joist hangers. Just make sure to snugly fit the wood in place and screw them in. A framing nailer works great, or you can use screws if you want to be fancy! This way, you won’t end up with boards that are too short, and they'll stay put.

Thanks for the tips! So I just need to screw the 2x4s directly between the joists, right?
