I'm getting a 240v outlet installed for my new electric dryer, which means I need to cap off my unused gas line. The flexible hose is quite far from the shut-off valve — should I cap it at the hose location, or is it better to remove the pipe and cap it closer to the shut-off, which is about 5 feet away? There's also a spot above where the hose connects that might be easier to use with less pipe removal. Any advice on the best approach?

If you don’t have any other gas appliances, it might be a good idea to call your utility company to turn the gas off. Even if you’re using zero gas, they still charge a delivery fee. Better to play it safe!
I recommend removing the pipe as close to the shut-off valve as you can and capping it there. Just make sure to brace the pipe with one hand while loosening any connections to avoid creating a gas leak, which can be really dangerous. People usually hire plumbers for this for good reason! If you decide to DIY, investing in a gas leak sensor is wise.
Thanks for the advice! I really want to try to do it myself but not at the risk of my house blowing up!
You can also spray soapy water on the joints to check for bubbles. Usually, leaks are detectable either by smell or with that technique, especially if the pipe’s exposed. And gas detectors are pretty affordable these days for basic models.

Just a heads up, we have a gas stove, so that might not be an option for me. But thanks for the tip!
