How do I properly fill in my koi pond?

Hey everyone! I have a koi pond in my backyard that my family and I have been wanting to fill in for a while now. We've mostly drained it and have covered it with a tarp, but there are still a lot of weeds and lily pads underneath. I know this might sound like a silly question, especially since I'm a first-time homeowner, but can I just dump dirt over the weeds to fill it in? I plan to take out the rocks and the pump, but I'm unsure about the weeds. Any advice would be appreciated!

I've had my koi pond for about 25 years and have filled in a few old ones. Before you fill it in, make sure there’s no liner left. If you're just covering the weeds, keep in mind they'll break down over time, causing some settling. To avoid that, I'd suggest removing all organic material first and then layering fill dirt, compacting it a bit as you go. Finish with about 6 inches of topsoil on top for a solid finish!

Awesome, thanks! Quick follow-up: Would Turf Builder lawn soil from Home Depot work for filling this in, or do I need something else?
