I'm working on a woodworking project with my dad, who wants me to paint a large board. The instructions are clear: prime, sand, paint. My dilemma is whether I should apply two coats of primer in this order: prime, then sand; or prime, sand, and then another coat of primer followed by sanding again. Also, what's the best method for getting rid of any dust after sanding? I want to avoid bothering my dad with too many questions, so I'm looking for some solid advice here!

You should definitely go with this order: prime, sand, prime, and then sand again before painting. Don't forget to wipe the surface with a damp cloth or vacuum it to get all that dust off before you start painting. It'll give you a much smoother finish!
Okay thanks! I figured this was the answer but wanted to double check on the off chance that I was wrong.
When sanding, make sure to go with the grain of the wood. Start with a coarser grit and then move to finer ones. This helps avoid scratches and gives a smoother finish!
By 'smaller', he means with progressively larger numbered sandpaper. Just making sure you're clear on that!

I remember that from Karate Kid!
