How do I properly seal my bathtub and shower walls?

Hey everyone! We just bought our first home, and I'm no handyman, so I hope I can describe my situation clearly. The previous owners tried to reseal the shower, but they did a pretty terrible job. They even covered the area with some small tiles at the bottom, but there's a gap between the wall and these tiles, allowing water to get underneath. My boyfriend and I initially thought those tiles were just for looks, but I got curious when a few started coming loose. I pulled some up, and it's clear that the wall behind is wet because it hasn't been sealed properly. I'm worried that the gap is too big for just putting silicone over it. The walls are made of a plastic-like material, probably over regular walls. Any advice on what I should do? I've linked a picture here: [imgur link]. Thanks for your help! We want to tackle the issues before they get worse!

If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, it might be worth calling in a contractor. But if you want to tackle it, you could first remove the loose tiles and clean the area thoroughly. After that, replacing the seal and regrouting might help. Just make sure everything is dry before you apply new silicone.

It sounds like your situation might require some serious work. If the tiles are coming off and the wall is wet, you might need to remove the tiles entirely and replace them. It’s crucial to make sure everything is properly sealed to prevent further damage. You could also check for mold while you’re at it—better safe than sorry! If you're not handy, maybe consider hiring a pro to do it right. You don't want to make things worse!

Thanks for the advice! I suspected it might be a bigger job than I thought. I’ll definitely check for mold too. Hoping to get it sorted soon!
