How Do I Properly Wire a New Hardwired Dishwasher?

Asked By CheerfulKoala92 On

I'm looking to replace my old dishwasher, which is hardwired directly to our electrical box—there's no outlet to just plug it in. When my new dishwasher arrives, is it really as straightforward as cutting off the plug, splicing the wires together with the existing electrical line, and connecting them? I have a feeling this type of installation isn't what places like Leon's or the Brick consider basic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you prefer a plug-in option, you can technically set it up that way too! You'd just wire the new dishwasher like you would with a plug-in model, which could make things easier down the line. Not every model comes with a plug, so check if you can make one if you want flexibility. Just ensure any outlet you use is GFCI protected and be cautious if you’re not super comfortable with electrical work!

Great point! Having a plug makes maintenance so much simpler.

Most new dishwashers are designed to be hardwired. First, make sure to turn off the breaker before you start working on it. You’d disconnect the old one at its junction and use the same cable to connect the new dishwasher, following its installation instructions. Just remember, safety first! Turn the power off and check the connection to make sure everything is secure.

And if you're nervous about doing it yourself, it's totally okay to call an electrician. Better safe than sorry!

In Ontario, it’s required for dishwashers to be hardwired, and they usually don’t come with plugs. Instead of cutting anything, you'll just remove the existing junction box and connect the house wiring directly to your new dishwasher at the junction point usually found at the front bottom of the unit. Check your installation guide for specifics!

Thanks for clarifying that! I’m in Ontario too, so I appreciate the insight. I’ll definitely consult the installation manual.
