How Do I Remove a Grouted Drain Cover in My Shower?

Hey everyone! I'm stuck trying to remove the drain cover in my basement shower. There seems to be a clog because I noticed about 2 inches of standing water when I showered earlier today. It looks like the previous builder grouted the drain cover down really well. I've already attempted to chip away the grout and even tried gently hammering the edges of the cover, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions on what I should do next? Should I just go for some liquid plumber?

Have you thought about using a hook to pull it up? You might need to carefully work around the edges a bit, but pulling could be more effective than hitting it with a hammer. Plus, if it ends up breaking, Oatey makes good replacement parts for drains!

What type of hook should I use? I don't have a lot of tools at home!

That grout shouldn't have been used on the drain cover in the first place! Try using a thin flat screwdriver to chip away at it gently, and then maybe use a hook tool to lift it out. Just be careful, you don't want to break anything else!

Do you have a specific kind of hook in mind? I feel like I might break something!
