I'm trying to figure out the best way to remove the popcorn ceilings in my kitchen and dining room. Unfortunately, it looks like they've been painted with an oil-based paint, which makes me worry about using the dry scraping and soaking method I read about. Has anyone had experience with this kind of ceiling? Should I just cover it with new drywall instead? I'd really prefer to scrape it off if I can. Thanks for any tips!

From my experience, painted popcorn ceilings are a real challenge. You’ll likely need to dry scrape first to knock off some of the texture, then try soaking. The issue is that the water might struggle to penetrate through the paint, making it more difficult to remove and creating a mess. Just be prepared—it could be a bit of a nightmare but totally manageable! Some ceilings I've done ended up needing drywall instead, so assess how it comes off before committing to one method.
It might actually be less messy with the oil paint on it compared to unpainted popcorn. I’d suggest trying a small patch first to see how it goes. If it’s too tough, it might be better to think about covering it instead.
