How Do I Secure My Door Hinges in an Old Building?

I live in an old building, and I've been having issues with the screws in the top door hinge coming loose. The problem seems to be that the hole in the jamb is too deep and wide for the screws to hold properly. I've tried a temporary fix with toothpicks, but they're coming out again. Does anyone have suggestions for a more permanent solution?

A good approach is to replace those toothpicks with a solid plug, like a golf tee. Just glue it in the hole securely, and then pre-drill a pilot hole for the screw. This should give you a stronger hold!

So just glue the tee into the hole, drill a pilot, and then rescrew? Is a golf tee really wide enough for this?
