How Do I Talk to Landscapers About My Budget?

Hey everyone, I'm looking to revamp my backyard because it currently has a mix of plants that just don't look good and offer no privacy. I want to put in some larger trees and cohesive bushes that are properly planted around the gas and water lines. Since I can't handle this myself, I've started contacting landscapers. However, they keep asking about my budget, and I really have no idea what to tell them. I'm clueless if this should cost me $5,000 or $25,000. Is it okay to ask a landscaper for a general idea of costs without having a budget in mind? I want to avoid making things awkward and I'm not trying to lowball anyone. I'm just trying to get a handle on what's realistic. Any advice on how to approach this would be super helpful! Also, I recently moved to a new area, so I'm concerned about possible communication mishaps too.

When they ask for your budget, they’re trying to figure out a starting point. Honestly, you should have a rough idea of what you're willing to spend, like saying, 'I can probably manage between $5k and $20k.' This helps them understand what to suggest instead of leaving you in the dark. Just be honest about what you can afford, and they can give you some options based on that.

That's a good approach! If you're unsure, just reiterate that you're looking for guidance on costs. That way, you can get a range before committing.
