How Do I Turn a Fallen Tree into Lumber?

A tree in my backyard in North Georgia recently fell during a strong storm, and I'm not sure what species it is yet. It's a medium-sized tree, and I'm getting quotes from tree removal companies. I'm aware that the lumber will be green and could have issues with bugs and rot. I don't have the space to just let it dry for months or years. How can I find a kiln? What specifics should I give the tree removal crew about cutting and transporting the logs? Is there a way to tell if the wood will be good for any woodworking projects? Any additional tips would be appreciated!

You'll definitely want to reach out to a mobile sawmill. Most traditional sawmills typically don't handle wood from yards, so finding someone who can do it on-site is your best bet. They may cut the tree down for you or might need it prepped ahead of time. If you’re aiming for 8-foot boards, make sure those logs are at least 12 feet long to give you some room. Also, call around local sawmills about drying space since they can get pretty busy.
