How Do You Figure Out What You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Hey everyone! I'm gearing up to be a senior in college, and while I'm excited about the future, I'm feeling pretty lost when it comes to my career path. I'm soon-to-be married and I love my studies in religions and communications, but I can't see how either of my majors lead to a clear job. I enjoy being a student, but I also realize that continuing to school without a solid plan isn't ideal. I have a lot of diverse interests and I feel overwhelmed by all the options. How do I narrow things down? How can I tell if I've made the right choice? I'd love to hear how you all figured out your own career paths!

I definitely relate to the uncertainty! One way to approach this is to explore jobs that resonate with what excites you personally. It doesn't have to be perfect at first; think about what you might enjoy doing for the time being. Try to learn through mistakes and experiences, as those can guide you to your true passion. And remember, it’s okay to not have everything figured out right now!

That’s such encouraging advice! I guess I just need to focus on exploration rather than perfection.

Agreed! The journey is what really helps shape what we want.

You're right that not having a clear direction is normal, especially at this stage in life. My advice would be to gain some work experience first. It'll give you insight into what you enjoy and don’t enjoy. Don’t stress about being defined by just one job; people change careers all the time. Use this time to explore without the pressure of making a lifelong decision yet!

I appreciate this perspective! It makes the idea of trying different jobs less daunting.

Exactly! Starting with something interesting can lead to further discoveries about yourself.

Honestly, most people are in the same boat as you, including me! I think many folks just stumble into jobs rather than having a clear plan. Given your majors, you might look into being a professor, working in media, or even creating a YouTube channel that discusses religious beliefs in an engaging way. It's super common to not have a clear answer, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Maybe start by listing jobs you don’t want to do, and work from there! Good luck!

That sounds like great advice! I love the idea of exploring different career paths instead of forcing yourself into a specific box.

For sure! Trying things out is key, and you can always shift gears later.

To help steer your options, I like to break down jobs into three parts: tasks you do, the people you work with, and the work environment. Think about what you want in each category. Also, don’t overthink it; just pick the next job that seems interesting. You’ll learn a lot just from trying different roles!

What a great way to frame it! Simplifying the decision-making process helps a ton.

This totally resonates! Sometimes we need to step back and look at the bigger picture.
