I've been getting into woodworking by watching YouTube videos, where people build everything from floating shelves to beds. They often describe their projects as being 'cheap,' but I'm finding it hard to recreate these designs due to high costs here in Australia. Specifically, I'm interested in the current price of an 8x2 dressed pine board (or something similar) in the USA. I can't access information from stores like Lowes or Home Depot from over here, so any insight would be appreciated!

If you’re in southern Ontario, a 2x8, 8ft white pine board is about $15.80 AUD, which feels pretty steep. Just to give you a ballpark, a 2x6, 8ft pine would be around $7.50 AUD. I usually wait for the colder months to buy my pine, as it tends to be cheaper then, plus it's better quality if stored properly.
From what I’ve seen, you can actually get an 8-foot 2x8 of dimensional lumber in places like New York for about $10 USD. Prices have been pretty wild since COVID started, though; hardwoods have really shot up. Last year, walnut was around $7.50 per board foot, but now you'll pay around $10.
I recently built a pretty sizable deck (16'x24') with pressure-treated lumber, and it ran me CAD$2100 for the wood alone. For smaller projects, I picked up some 1"x2" x 6' clear pine boards for around $10 each. Definitely adds up!
