How Hard Is It to Move a Washer and Dryer to the Garage?

I'm buying a home where the washer and dryer are currently in the kitchen, which I really don't like. The garage doesn't have any plumbing set up. I'm planning to hire a plumber since I assume that's the right professional for this. How complicated will it be to get the washer and dryer set up in the garage? Also, what kind of costs should I expect for this project?

While having the laundry in the kitchen is far from ideal, moving it to the garage can present its own challenges. Garages can get very hot or cold, and if clean laundry ends up on the floor, well, that’s not great. It’s really about how accessible existing plumbing is. You might want to consider an area closer to the bathroom if plumbing there looks better. Plus, if you choose a heat pump washer, you won’t need to worry about venting it outside, which can simplify things a bit.

Good point; I was considering that, but I don’t see many options besides the kitchen and garage.

Totally get it! Storage often gets tricky in smaller homes.

The difficulty really hinges on how far the water lines are from the garage and whether there’s an easy way to get to a drain. The drain is usually the biggest hurdle. If there’s no drain close by, it might not be worth the expense to try to run one. Also, you’ll need to consider running a 240-volt power supply for your dryer, so you might need to hire an electrician too.

Yeah, definitely check if your garage can accommodate that extra power requirement!

For sure! Figuring out all the plumbing first is crucial.

If your garage shares a wall with existing plumbing, then relocating the washer and dryer could be possible. But if there’s no plumbing access nearby, it might not be worth the effort and cost. I always tell customers that almost anything is doable, but you have to weigh whether it’s justified based on the costs involved.

Thanks! I’ll definitely reach out to a plumber soon and see what my options are.

That makes total sense; I didn't think about plumbing access being a key factor.
