How Long to Wait After Using BIN Shellac Primer Before Applying Joint Compound?

I'm dealing with some walls where the drywall paper has come off, and I've read that using a shellac-based primer like BIN is essential to prevent the paint from soaking into the wall. After priming, how long do I need to wait before I can apply joint compound? I know that while shellac takes a while to fully cure, it can be recoated with paint in about 45 minutes. Can I apply joint compound after that time, or should I wait longer?

You should be good to go in just about 45 minutes! That timeframe is usually fine for applying joint compound over the BIN primer. Just ensure the primer feels dry to the touch before starting on the joint compound.

I think it might be a bit premature to jump right into joint compound after 45 minutes. It’s probably best to let the shellac fully cure for a bit longer, but you can usually do it after about an hour to be safe. Better a little patience than dealing with future issues!
