We're thinking about converting our garage into an in-law suite since it would allow family to be nearby and help us with the kids. However, I'm concerned about privacy and sound transfer. If you have a converted garage, how well can you hear each other? Do you have any tips on soundproofing, especially regarding normal conversations and keeping the noise from loud movies down?

Use soundproof insulation on any interior walls between the house and garage. We have a mudroom that acts as a buffer, and it's really effective. We can only hear something if it's cranked up really loud. Just a heads up, you might share cooking smells because of the HVAC system, but that hasn't been a big deal for us!
To minimize noise transfer, consider using staggered studs when building the partition wall. This means that the studs for the drywall in your garage should not touch those in the house's wall, which helps to reduce sound transmission. Plus, adding insulation is a must!
Thanks for the tip! We're definitely upgrading the insulation and will look into the staggered stud method.
Glad to help! Those techniques can really make a difference.

That's reassuring to know! Thanks for sharing your experience!
