How Many Bags of Concrete Do I Really Need for a Slab?

I'm needing some help with calculating the amount of concrete for a slab my husband is working on. He believes he only needs 8 bags of 60 lbs each, but based on my research for a slab measuring 6 feet by 3 feet with a depth of 2.5 inches, Google suggests we would need around 45 bags, which seems a lot! Can someone clarify how many bags we truly need? I appreciate any insight – thank you!

It sounds like your husband meant to make the slab 2.5 inches deep. For a 6' x 3' slab, you’d end up needing around 3.75 cubic feet of concrete. Each 60 lb Sakrete bag covers about 0.45 cubic feet, so you'd actually be needing a bit more than 8 bags – I’d suggest grabbing at least one more to be safe!

Yes, I meant the dimensions are 6' x 3' and 2.5 inches thick. I suggested we go a bit thicker to 3 inches. Thanks for your help!

You're right on track! A slab of 18 square feet by 2.5 inches thick will give you roughly 3.75 cubic feet. With each bag covering about 0.45 cubic feet, you’ll need just over 8 bags. I’d recommend getting 9 bags to cover any extra just in case.

Thank you so much!!! I’ll definitely tell him to pick up one more!
