I'm planning to grow some hydroponic watermelons but I'm unsure how many I should let fruit on each plant. Is there a recommended limit? Also, should I restrict the number of vines that grow?

My plant decided to only support one watermelon last year. It did try growing a second, but that one didn’t make it. The watermelon I did get was pretty impressive, though!

It's usually best to limit to one watermelon per plant if you want them to be good-sized. I tried growing them before, and it was a hassle when they got too small. But honestly, I love the foliage, so I keep experimenting!

Wait, are you saying one vine or one watermelon per plant? That's a bit confusing!

It really depends on the size of the watermelon you’re growing. Check the seed packet for guidance! For instance, my mini watermelons suggest letting 3 to 5 fruits per plant. I grew Charleston Greys last year and only allowed 1 per plant, which worked out perfectly. Just make sure your space and trellis can handle it, and I would recommend removing extra female flowers if airflow is an issue.
