I have a vegetable garden that's around 4000 square feet, but it's been sitting idle for the last couple of years. I'm getting it ready for planting again and want to know how much chicken litter I should mix into the soil. I'm thinking about adding 200-300 pounds—will that be enough to improve the soil nutrients?

Chicken litter is really rich in nitrogen and can actually burn your plants if you use too much of it. It's a good idea to let it compost for a while before adding it to your garden, or apply it in the fall and let it work its magic through winter. That way, you're giving it time to break down and become a better soil amendment!

What if the chicken litter has already been sitting in storage for about six months? Would that change things?
