I've got a hole in my yard that's about 10 feet wide and 7 inches deep at its deepest point. I'm considering whether to buy bags of dirt myself or hire a local landscaping company to fill it in. Since I've never done anything like this before, I'm a bit lost on how to figure out how much dirt I actually need and what the costs might be. Any advice?

You'll want to calculate the volume first! If your hole is roughly 10 feet by 10 feet and 6 inches deep, you need about 50 cubic feet of dirt. Since a yard of dirt is around 27 cubic feet, you'll need less than 2 cubic yards to fill it. So, grab that dirt and get to work!
Honestly, I'd say just buy a bunch of bags and start filling it. You might buy 10 bags just to see how it looks. Based on my experience with similar depressions, it’ll probably take some trial and error to get the level right. No need for anything fancy!
You could look up some volume calculation formulas, but I say just fill it with whatever you can get your hands on. Regular garden dirt is cheap, so start there.
