I'm considering hiring a professional landscaping company to repair my backyard after a major pool renovation that really tore up the space. My backyard is about half an acre, with around a third of that being grassy area. I need to re-sod or reseed the grass, fix broken sprinkler heads, add some plants and bushes, prevent rainwater from pooling near the pool, and plant about 15 privacy trees along the back fence. The pool patio was already taken care of during the renovation. Given all of this work, is budgeting around $50,000 reasonable?

As a landscape contractor, I’d first ask about access to your yard. The cost for plants really depends on their size, and whether you're just needing to replace some sprinkler heads or if new lines need to be run. Plus, consider if you’ll need to grade the soil or bring in new topsoil.
If you can bring in machinery, it may significantly lower labor costs. How you got the excavating done for the pool will help in planning this repair too!
If you're in North Jersey, I can provide a quote! I've been in this business for 26 years, so I've got you covered!
Thanks, but I'm actually in the NYC area.
As a landscaper with nearly two decades of experience, here’s what you might be looking at:
- For sod installation, you’re generally talking about $800 to $1,200 per pallet, which breaks down to about $1.78 to $2.67 per square foot.
- Privacy trees will cost anywhere from $250 to $600 each installed, depending on their size, totaling between $3,700 to $9,000 for 15 trees.
- Expect bushes to run about $60 to $80 each, installed.
- Mulch prices are around $105 to $150 per yard installed.
A budget of $50k could definitely get you a nice landscape, but I wouldn’t recommend revealing your budget to the company initially, or you might find it centers around that amount. Make sure to get a detailed design proposal - any reputable landscaping firm should be able to provide this!
Awesome response. Thank you so much!
I agree with a lot of what you said, but I think it's important to disclose your budget. You wouldn't want to plan a $15k job when you have $50k to spend!

I can definitely bring in machinery; we just need to take down a section of the fence.
