How Often Should You Repaint Cedar Siding?

Hey everyone! My husband and I just bought our first home with painted cedar siding, but it's starting to chip. I think it's time for a full repaint rather than just touching up certain areas. We live in southern Michigan, so we're experiencing all four seasons. Once we get it professionally repainted, how often should we expect to repaint it completely, especially if we keep up with cleaning and touch-ups?

The frequency really depends on the paint quality and how well it was applied. In my experience with cedar siding, I had it painted every 4 to 5 years using good paint from Sherwin Williams. When we switched to latex paint, we had to prime it well since the latex wouldn’t stick otherwise. After that, it's just a matter of cleaning it and doing touch-ups as needed!

Just a heads up, if you go for a dark color with latex paint, it can bubble up in the heat, leading to more work for you every year. Definitely something to think about!
