How Should I Handle My Dying Indoor Herbs?

I've got some potted indoor herbs that are reaching the end of their life cycle, and I'm not sure what to do. My parsley has tried to bolt a couple of times, and I've pruned it back and harvested the leaves, but it's starting to look really sad now with a bunch of woody stalks left. As for my sage, it's still alive but it's not growing and also looks pretty forlorn. Should I just toss them out and start fresh with new soil and seeds, or could I plant some new seeds around the old plants and leave the existing roots and stalks in the pot?

I say let them self-seed if you can! It can give you a nice surprise next season, plus you'll still have the plant while you wait. Just keep monitoring them to see if they perk up. If it's looking too gloomy for your taste, though, you might consider planting new seeds alongside the old ones. Just make sure the roots aren't taking up too much space!

Thanks for the tip! I didn't think about self-seeding, but I might give that a shot. I don’t like my pots looking empty either!
