I'm working on a DIY project to fix the walls in my room and I've got some holes to deal with. Can I just cover the holes with mud and then paint over it? What's the best way to tackle this? Here's a link to a photo of what I'm dealing with: https://imgur.com/a/MNr5hwq

It looks like a pretty big damage area. Fixing it might be tougher than it seems, especially if you're new to this. Make sure to remove any old adhesive and trim away any peeling paper. You'll need a good amount of compound, and be prepared to sand and apply multiple layers to get a flat finish.
Before you start applying mud, make sure to seal the brown paper first. A thin mixture of wood glue and water works great for that. It will help prevent further damage and give you a smoother surface for your compound.
So you're talking about the deep brown paper holes, right? Could I use a bonding primer instead?
