How Should I Repair or Replace My Broken Double Hung Window?

Asked By CuriousCat77 On

Recently, our house was broken into, and the culprits managed to force open our double hung window, damaging the wooden frame but leaving the glass intact. The bottom side of the top pane is broken, and there's a crack that's worsening over time. I'm torn between repairing the window and replacing it altogether. I'm also concerned about the security of the window going forward and want to know how best to reinforce it. Should I contact a glass repair company and a carpenter, or is there a better approach I can take? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend getting a professional glazier to assess the damage. They have the experience needed to provide the best advice for your specific situation since it’s hard for anyone online to gauge the full extent of the damage. It's smarter to trust a pro rather than attempting a fix based on general advice.

I agree, but my issue is mainly with the wooden frame, not the pane itself. I think the glass can be handled.
