I'm constructing a 6'x6' outdoor catio that will connect to my window with a tunnel for my cat to enjoy the outdoors. I'm using pressure-treated 2x4s for the frame and joists, with 5/4 deck boards on top, supported by 4x4 corner posts. The walls and roof will be framed with 2x2s and covered in chicken wire to keep my cat safe, and I'm planning to add shelves for climbing. Since it's primarily for my cat and not meant for heavy human traffic—though I may step on it occasionally—I'm unsure how many joists I should include and how far apart they should be. I'm thinking of using four 2x4 joists, two placed closer to the center and two more evenly spaced between the sides. Is that spacing okay, or do I need to change my approach?

If you’re considering the weight distribution, you might want to think about upgrading to 2x6s instead. They’re not much more expensive, and you could space them 16" apart. Plus, make sure to use joist hangers rather than just fasteners for extra stability.
You definitely want to build it strong enough! Even though it’s small, you don’t want it collapsing just to save a bit of cash. I’d recommend going for 12" spacing. This way, it’ll feel a lot sturdier, especially since you’re using 2x4s. Also, avoid pressure-treated wood in places where your cat could come into contact with it—save it for areas that touch the ground.
Totally agree! A little extra support can go a long way, and it’s better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into 2x6s if the cost isn’t too high.
