I'm living in a rental where I'm not allowed to make any damage to the walls. I'm curious about how tall I can build a shelf without having to anchor it and what type of shelf would be best for holding books and some collectibles. Any advice would be appreciated!

Technically, you don’t have to anchor your shelf at all unless it’s ridiculously tall. But here are a few things to think about:
- Do you live somewhere that has frequent earthquakes? That could make it more prone to tipping.
- Is the shelf near anything like your bed? If you’re worried about it falling, you definitely don’t want it landing on you!
- Do you have pets or kids? They might try to climb on it, increasing the risk of it tipping.
If none of those apply to you personally, a lot of folks just go without the anchor. But you might consider anchoring it secretly if it’s safe just for peace of mind!
Oh, and if you do want to anchor it without your landlord knowing, you could always fill the holes and paint over them when you move out, especially if the wall is white. Super easy to cover up that way!

So I can pretty much go for any height as long as it’s not extremely tall? Thanks a lot, I really appreciate the info! Have a great day!
