How to Achieve a Factory Finish on Hand-Painted Cabinets?

Hey everyone, I recently had my kitchen cabinets hand-painted by a recommended painter. Instead of using spray, he applied the paint with rollers and a brush, adequately degreasing, sanding, priming, and applying three coats of Sherwin Williams' Urethane paint. While the job looks good with few visible marks, I'm feeling like there's something lacking in the overall finish. I'm curious if adding a layer of spray paint using the same product might give them a more polished look. I'm aiming for a color that feels saturated and dense, preferably something close to a factory finish. Would a fourth coat sprayed be beneficial? Since the original painter doesn't use a sprayer, I'd need to hire someone else for this work. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

I recently sprayed my cabinets with Sherwin Williams Emerald. I used their tinted primer, applied two coats of paint, and topped it all off with two coats of General Finishes poly. I sanded between each coat with increasingly finer grits, ending with 1500 for a smooth finish. Mine turned out with a factory look and only had a tiny chip after six years of heavy use. I think for your situation, sanding, adding one coat of spray paint, and applying a poly finish could really help you reach that polished look you're after.

It would help if you could share some photos of your cabinets! But I agree with the advice you received—sanding and adding more paint plus a poly finish sounds like a solid plan. I hadn’t heard of using 1500 grit before, but it sounds good (I’m still learning myself!). I’ve worked on some tables with a multi-step process similar to what you described, and it ended up looking great!

I tried to post pictures of the cabinets but couldn't for some reason. It seems like that function isn’t available here, which is a bit strange.
