How to Achieve a Gloss Finish on Partly Painted Cornhole Boards?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of building a couple of cornhole boards, and I'm looking to achieve a glossy finish on them. I plan to paint part of the board but want to keep some of the plywood exposed. I'll be using gloss paint for the painted sections, but I'm trying to figure out how I can make the unpainted parts glossy as well. Is there a gloss finish I can apply over everything after painting that would also cover the bare plywood areas? Thanks for your help!

You'll definitely want to apply a top coat over the entire board to get that glossy look. Using multiple coats of polyurethane is a good way to go. Just be sure to follow the instructions, and don't skip sanding between each coat for the smoothest finish. Aim for about 3 to 5 coats for the best results! For the plywood sections, consider using a natural finish first to seal and protect them, and if you're up for it, semi-gloss could be a nice balance too.

Just a heads up about using polyurethane over paint—it can sometimes yellow it over time. Just make sure you’re getting a high-quality product to avoid that issue. It's totally fine to go over paint with it, but definitely double-check how it interacts with your specific paint.
