A friend of mine is in the process of replacing their Culligan water softening system and installing a three-stage sediment filter. Their planned setup is water source > sediment filter > softener > house. They also want to add a utility sink in the garage to avoid going outside for water for their pets and houseplants. What do they need to install between the sediment filter and softener to allow for a sink, without pulling in any saltwater? If this question fits better in a DIY context, please let me know. You can simply tee off from the line between the sediment filter and the softener. This way, you can easily direct some of the water to your utility sink without needing any extra equipment. Just make sure everything's properly connected, and you should be good to go!
Using softened water isn't necessarily a problem unless you're using sodium chloride, as that can build up sodium in the soil for houseplants or be an issue for pets. If that’s your concern, maybe consider using a different kind of salt, like potassium chloride, which is more eco-friendly but a bit pricier. If your pets or plants show any bad reactions, it might be worth exploring this option further.
I appreciate the input, but from my experience, the sodium in softened water can indeed cause problems for both plants and pets. It's something to definitely be cautious about!
