How to Add Hardwood Plank Backing to My Bookshelf?

Asked By CraftyNinja42 On

I'm working on a small solid walnut bookshelf that measures 36x42 and I want to attach hardwood planks to the back. I've read that I should rabbet each plank's edge since they will be vertical, but I'm also concerned about wood movement, so I won't glue them. I plan to put a groove in the back edge of the bookshelf to ensure the panels fit flush. However, I'm struggling to find any tutorials or visuals for this process. I have 1/4 walnut boards ready but haven't made any final cuts on the bookshelf until I clarify the backing technique. I also need advice on the type of nails to use and I know pre-drilling is essential.

Instead of rabbet joints, I’d recommend cutting a groove around the entire back and using plywood with walnut veneer for added stability. You can float the panel into the groove similar to how rails and stiles work in cabinet doors. This way, you won’t have to worry about wood movement as much and it can give a clean look!

That sounds like a neat approach! I guess if walnut plywood isn’t available, the planks you have will work too. Just make sure to get the grooves right for a smooth fit.
